Proclamations

Each year, Meatout urges governors and mayors across the U.S. to support a healthy, plant-based diet by officially proclaiming March 20th as the Great American Meatout.

Help us get a proclamation in your city and/or state by becoming a local Meatout representative! Participating is simple. Just e-mail us with your name and contact information and we'll send in the request. Once we receive a copy of the proclamation for our files, you can keep it as a souvenir!

Proclamations help bring media attention. When a Mayor or Govenor issues a proclamation, this provides a great opportunity to get the Meatout message in the media. We'll send out press releases and we're available for interviews to explain to the public the benefits of the vegan lifestyle.

Last year, Meatout received major media coverage because Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed a Meatout Day Proclamation in the face of public scrutiny. Following the Governor’s signing, animal exploiters across Michigan went to the press, calling it “insensitive” and “unconscionable” that Granholm suggest citizens try plant-based eating. Not missing a beat, FARM and supporters across the country countered with dozens of media interviews, over 150 published letters to the editor, and even a Meatout TV ad that ran in Lansing during the Michigan State basketball game.

Please view the detailed listing of supporting governors and mayors since 1985, and a few sample proclamations below. The proclamations encourage residents to explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. View the standard proclamation text (PDF).

Meatout 2010 proclamationswere issued by the governors of Connecticut, Michigan, and New Hampshire and the mayors of Baltimore, Cleveland, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Sacramento, San Antonio, and State College (PA). Please view past proclamations below.
