FARM's Meatout Feed-In for Peace

Washington, DC -- March 21, 2009

Saturday, March 21st, FARM celebrated the 25th annual observance of Meatout with thousands of peace activists at a massive rally and March on the Pentagon. FARM staff and volunteers connected with thousands of social justice activists and visitors, who enjoyed Tofurky sandwiches and Primal Spirit Meatless Jerky while learning about the joys and benefits of a nonviolent, vegan diet.

A Meatout information table offered free Veg Starter Guides, Compassion Over Killing's VegDC Restaurant Guides, information about cruelty-free products, Meatout Mondays sign-up, and more.

Leafleters also distributed FARM's "Choose Peace" handouts, as well as Meatout 2009 cards reflecting this year's theme: Change Your Diet - Change The World! Large signs and banners carried the message of a non-violent vegan diet far and wide.

A video screen rounded out our outreach by playing public service ads and “Meet your Meat” to strongly reinforce the vegan message.

Of course, the biggest hit was the free food -- Tofurky Sandwiches and Primal Sticks were distributed to thousands! Volunteers engaged flocks of curious demonstrators who sampled some of the best meat-alternatives on the market.

Thanks to the generous food donors and helpful volunteers, FARM distributed 1,000 Tofurky and Vegenaise half sandwiches and 1,000 vegan jerky Primal Sticks.

After the rally, FARM staff and volunteers joined the march (from the Lincoln Memorial to Crystal City), using our large signs and banners to further strengthen the vegan connection with nonviolence.

Meatout was extremely well-received. Many people were already vegetarian or vegan and thrilled to have us there with our message (and especially our food). Others were curious, stating that they didn’t know there were options like Tofurky, Primal Sticks, and Vegenaise. After receiving information combined with the tasty food, a few young vegetarians even vowed to go vegan on the spot. Of course, there are always a few naysayers... but we convinced most of them.

Huge thanks to the dedicated volunteers who made 1,000 half sandwiches and joined us at the event! We were able to educate activists and visitors about the violence inherent in meat and other animal products. We were able to show how a true culture of non-violence not only excludes war, it also extends our circle of compassion to include animals, the world's poor, and the planet.

Meatout 2009 is proud to have encouraged people to take the first step towards achieving a peaceful, non-violent culture by going vegan.
